New business owners, or to be honest most business owners, the idea of crafting the right message to interest the right people is a daunting and at times painful task.  Well, it doesn’t have to be.

Now imagine you know exactly what your future customer wants to hear.  Their struggles, their goals and even the tone or words that resonate with them.  A Customer Avatar or Marketing Persona can help you solidify just that. The exercise of creating your Customer Avatar will make you pause and reflect on how your product or service will be used by your ideal customer. It will help you craft your messaging to really deliver the sales you want.

So what exactly is a Customer Avatar? It is a profile for your ideal customer. By completing this exercise you will have a clear picture in your head of who your optimal purchaser of your product or service is.

You can’t hit a target you haven’t identified! So let’s get started.

By using the FREE WORKSHEET you’ll be able to map out the characteristics of your ideal customer. After which you will be able to:

  • Create and sell better products or services because you are able to anticipate your markets’ concerns, behaviors, and wants.
  • Figure out what social platforms they are spending their time. Spend your time being active where it matters most.
  • Be more effective in your advertising. Your marketing dollars will be well better spent when you know where to advertise and who to target. This is especially important for things like Google Adwords and Facebook Ads.
  • Write better copy for your website, ads, and emails because you will have a clear understanding of their pain points, needs, desires and wants.

Now that you have downloaded and started filling out the Customer Avatar Worksheet, you may notice that many of the fields are populated based on experience and market research.  For example, let’s say you spent the last 5 years working as a personal trainer and you are now transitioning to selling female-focused exercise equipment.  You can pull on your own experience that says your ideal customer would be a woman between 35-50 years of age that has a busy lifestyle and wants an at home, easy to use system to loose weight and get fit. What you may have to research is where your customer is searching for information.  Are they part of fitness related Facebook groups? are they attending PTA meetings? Are they sitting on the couch waiting to be sold the idea of a firmer body?

Once you have completed the worksheet, I want you to keep it handy.  Anytime you are writing a blog post, creating a new product or crafting a new online advertisement, I want you to look at your customer avatar.

Happy Empire Building!
